Delayed Interventions
With news reports out that the Journal of the National Cancer Institute has found that delayed intervention for prostate cancer is better than overtreatment, links to the August 16 journal site require you to PAY for the article. Has anyone posting here paid or has a university subscription to the journal? What about some details? News reports are pretty bad on the details.
Incidence of Intitial Local Theray: Low-Risk Prostate Cancer
The article in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute entitled "Incidence of Intitial Local Therapy Among Men With Lower-Risk Prostate Cancer in the United States" was reported on by ABC two nights ago. It is in the Augst 16, 2006 issue of the journal. It finds that among those with low-risk cancers upon diagnosis, 10% were overtreated with a radical prostatectomy and 45% with radiation therapy. I got a copy of the article and read it over. 73,566 men were included in the SEER registry. Has anyone else posting here read the entire article and not just the summary?

A couple of weeks ago, he asked for another test, which came back at a staggering 66.5. Yes, you read correctly. Our internist is obviously alarmed, as well he should be. (He diagnosed an enlarged prostate in August 2005 but didn't bother to have a PSA test run.) My husband was sent immediately to a urologist, who diagnosed cancer even before the biopsy (which is to be performed on August 7). Say a p
